This painting was inspired by a sutra, taken from the Astavakra Samhita, a treatise on Advaita Vedanta by the great (crippled) Indian sage Astavakra. The verses can be found in Sanskrit at the top of the canvas. Translated into English they read:

`You are neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor air, nor space.
In order to attain liberation, know the Self as the witness of all these and as Consciousness itself´.

On the canvas a combination of some typical symbols for the different elements, used in Eastern cosmology, are depicted: yellow square (earth), whitish circle (water), red triangle (fire), green semi disk (air), and a blueish flaming drop (space).
These five elements which constitute body, mind and the universe are eternally distinct from Consciousness.
Around the edges we find a border made up of eyes, symbolizing the witnessing quality of this Consciousness.
